Athlete’s families,
We are excited about working with your children this track season. Russell Middle School has a history of outstanding track and field competitors and we look forward to adding your child’s name to that list. Middle school track and field will introduce your child to the basics of competing in one of the world’s oldest sports while preparing them for competition in high school and beyond. Track and field competition involves many physically demanding activities including running (from 100 meters to 2 miles), hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus, and shot put. One of our goals as coaches will be to provide a safe learning environment for your child that will allow them to explore their talents and be part of the Russell athletic family. Another goal will be teaching your child the basics of each event in practice and allowing them the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in competition. We will try to ensure that all our team members get to participate to their fullest and have fun in both practice and competition. It is important for you and your child to understand what is expected as a member of the DogPack team.
Your child may not report for tryouts until we have a physical, from a licensed physician, and a guardian’s permission form on file. Both forms will be available from Coach Beneke. We will take the top 25 boys and 25 girls from the first week of tryouts to complete our roster. Once selected for the team, all athletes are required to pay a $25 athletic fee as well as purchase a uniform for an additional cost.
Russell track tryouts will begin in February and practice will continue through the last week of March. We will give your child a practice calendar the second week of practice. All practices are after school, until 4:15 p.m. Students must have a ride immediately following practice. Students may walk or ride with another student only with a note from their guardians. Students who are picked up more than 15 minutes late on three separate occasions will not be allowed to remain on the team. Practices are held on the Russell Middle School field or the Winder Barrow High School track. Students will not return to Russell from the track and should be picked up there on those practice days. Your child must participate in these practices to remain part of the team. After a student has missed three practices without a written excuse, they will be cut from the team.
Thank You for your support and cooperation. We look forward to meeting you and we anticipate an exciting and successful season.
Sincerely,
Coach Deardorff (770-867-8181)
